Abstract:
Considering the need to develop localised studies on reading practices and
operational models of public libraries, OAC and IPLB decided to implement a
research programme, involving final-year graduates of social sciences
courses in Portuguese universities.
The present work is an in-depth study on Beja Public Library, identifying
management and operational strategies, key agents and reading habits. The
singularity of this institution and its deep integration within the local
community makes this research an useful tool for cultural agents and
programmers, as well as for all those interested in the cultural dimension
of local development procedures.
