Abstract: This publication presents the results of several research works developed by OAC thought a collaboration protocol, signed in 2000, between Instituto Português de Museus (IPM), Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE) and Observatório das Actividades Culturais (OAC).
This book includes information from three sources. The first is the Museums Database (regularly updated by OAC), created in the framework of the referred protocol. It is used in this publication to characterize the records situation from 2000 to 2003. The second source is the Survey on Museums, applied by INE, for the period 2000-2002. Both information sources are used to explore several dimensions: tutelage, museum type, geographical distribution, opening year, function, installations, resources, visitors-oriented activities and number of visitors.
This book also presents a breakdown of the activities promoted by RPM (Portuguese Museum Network) from 2000 to 2004. The third information source - the Survey on RPM Museums - provides the first evaluation of the referred activities and a balance of the expectations about the future of this Network by the directors of the concerned museums (total of 114 in March 2004).
