Abstract: As stated in the previous edition of the Folha OBS ("Portuguese Cultural Habits (1): leisure activities") and reiterated herein in order to clarify the respective sources, the data on which the current analysis is based results from the 'Time-Budget Survey', launched by the Instituto Nacional de Estatística, with the participation of the OAC and other entities. The collection of information, on a national scale, took place during the last quarter of 1999. The data used herein is drawn from one of the instruments used - individual questionnaires. 8389 individuals were surveyed, as a representative sample of the Portuguese population aged 15 and above. In this third edition of the Folha OBS, presentation is made of the total national values of the modalities under survey (popular/contemporary music concerts; theatre; dance; classical/erudite music concerts; opera; other performances) in terms of sociological variables analysed from a dual perspective: the number of spectators by modality (which demonstrates the respective social structure) and by population (which demonstrates the spectator cohorts in each category or tier). In the latter case, without prejudice to occasional references whenever pertinent, the analysis excludes opera and "other performances" given the low levels of estimates and the risk of the high associated sampling errors.
