Abstract: An approach to the set of events defined as music festivals in Portugal makes possible to observe a sector with a significant level of dynamism in various distinct dimensions. In effect, in the 1980s and 1990s, certain developments express, in addition to a clear proliferation of such events, important changes that are traced herein. A continuous upward trend in the number of such initiatives is one of the most impressive changes. There is also a growing diversification of musical genres in the respective festivals, especially since the mid-1980s onwards. The dominant genre with the greatest longevity in this field is classical music, but is complemented by festivals dedicated to ethnic music, jazz and rock. In terms of the geographic distribution of these events, the principal areas are the North and the Lisbon region, with a clear concentration in coastal areas. The diversity of this kind of events is also expressed in terms of the agents promoting music festivals, in particular private associations, but also local authorities, private companies and educational establishments.
