Abstract: This is a study on the work of visitor guides to exhibitions, museums and art centres, focusing on the José de Azeredo Perdigão Modern Art Centre (Centro de Arte Moderna José de Azeredo Perdigão - CAMJAP) at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Belém Cultural Centre (Centro Cultural de Belém - CCB), the two institutions in the visual arts field in Lisbon which have most consistently undertaken to make the general pubic aware of the visual arts. The first part of this study places the educational aspects of museum life in context and seeks to describe the development of the concept of education within the museum. Under a series of headings, it examines an emerging occupational group in the culture-based professions in Portugal: education services professionals. The second part describes the relevant institutional contexts in which exhibition visitor guides operate. The third part observes the ways in which guides position themselves at several levels – amongst others: motivation and career opportunities; the importance of the profession in their overall career path; ties to the institutions where they work; reasons for exclusivity or multiple affiliations – and profiles five museum visitor guides.
