Abstract: Despite the weaknesses of the art market in Portugal, art galleries in Lisbon and throughout the country are currently being re-organised and revitalised, together with improvements in the institutional framework for the fine arts in Portugal.
A survey of a series of galleries in Lisbon was carried out in order to update and develop the results of a previous study published in 1999, in no. 4 of this Collection. The present work also includes a description of the visitors/clients of the surveyed galleries and a breakdown of magazine and newspapers articles on these galleries. In order to complement the contemporary perspective of the survey, a historical background is also provided, charting the trajectory of each gallery. The work also includes analysis of "Lisboarte Contemporânea", an initiative by Lisbon Municipal Council in collaboration with APGA (Portuguese Association of Art Galleries), as well as the gallery owner's receptiveness to this initiative. On the basis of a wide variety of different information, an overview is provided of the successes and difficulties that several galleries faced as a result of their strategies.
