Abstract: The present text provides the results of an audience survey for the 16th edition of the Almada International Theatre Festival (FITA), and evaluates the importance of this type of cultural event in terms of the formation and consolidation of spectators. Each edition of the FITA combines a festive and ephemeral atmosphere while furthering and consolidating the event’s notoriety, thus presenting a special opportunity for theatregoing. The festival is attended by different groups of spectators, varying from 'first-timers' to 'die-hard regulars', 'supporters' and 'occasional visitors'. Certain spectator groups provide a solid base of support for the festival, while others ensure that there is a constant renewal of audiences. The authors attempt to provide an in-depth analysis of the selectiveness, diversity and broadening of audience groups, in the light of various dimensions that are particularly important within this study, such as the context of conviviality related to the performances; the cultural practices of the spectators; the association membership and the role of schools in the formation of important cultural habits such as theatregoing.
