Abstract: From the mid-1980s onwards, the question of fixed book price - finally regulated in 1996 - gained considerable visibility, in line with the experience of other countries. This study faced the usual obstacles in terms of evaluation of procedures for which there is a lack of available data and very short time period. Nonetheless, analysis is made of a wide variety of different information sources and the widest possible spectrum of different viewpoints, often diametrically opposed. The study proposes an approach to this system of regulation in terms of the different procedures involved, including contextualisation within the international panorama; an attempt to characterise the book market in Portugal; systematic analysis of different viewpoints and evaluations of different agents, and finally an overview of the sector’s dynamics, considering present and predictable transformations.
