Abstract: What was the cultural impact of Expo'98 - Lisbon World Exhibition 1998? This study aims to provide a contribution to the debate on the cultural impact of Expo’98 through an analysis of media coverage - in particular press clippings - of the event.
As a unique event, the World Exhibition produced a complex series of effects including widespread festivities, re-contextualisation and intensification of interaction between different social groups and a rare form of civic attention on spaces designed for collective use.
The present work focuses on the main cultural aspects of Expo'98 together with an overview of the cultural events and dynamics that were originated by the Exhibition.
Alongside this study of the mega cultural event of Expo'98, a series of contributions have been prepared to provide a future sociological model for the analysis of large-scale contemporary events in general.
