Abstract: The integration of the Portuguese music industry in the world market since 1974 was initially achieved through a growing distribution of international catalogues in Portugal. But by the middle of 1990s this tendency for foreign imports, particularly evident in terms of the main international stars, began to be complemented by a tendency towards the export of Portuguese music, with a growing number of Portuguese artists gaining recognition in the international market. Portugal has nonetheless continued to be primarily an importer of music rather than an exporter. The present work analyses this process on the basis of the different stages of production/broadcasting/reception of recorded music (vinyl records, cassettes and CDs). Another key aspect of this study is the role of the State in relation to the phonographic activity, ranging from the prevention of piracy to financial support mechanisms. The annex includes a series of hitherto unpublished documents.
