Abstract:
This study on the art market includes a
survey of art galleries in Lisbon and Oporto and a case-study of an artist’s
career (Julião Sarmento). Specific aspects of a group of galleries
integrated within the Portuguese artistic community are identified, on the
basis of various indicators (areas and characteristics of exhibition spaces;
international activity; types of relationships between galleries and artists;
characteristics of gallery owners; typical profile of art collectors; etc.).
The particular case of a non-central art world like the Portuguese one is
revealed, paradoxically, through the idiosyncratic career of an artist who
has enjoyed considerable recognition within the international contemporary
art circuit. Relevant elements of his market recognition and projection are
also analysed in this study.
