Abstract: The study presented in this volume corresponds to Portugal’s Report within the frame of the Evaluation Programme of national cultural policies of the Council of Europe.
The text reviews the evolution of cultural policy in Portugal since 1985 to 1995.
The work includes analysis of the different cultural sectors - with an emphasis on the objectives of successive cultural policies, legislation and financial support, the cultural supply-demand relationship and the distribution of cultural activities across Portugal. The in-depth analysis is complemented by a transversal overview of the different sectors, with special attention on issues such as the privatisation of cultural activities, the evolution of artistic training and redefinition of professions in this sector, the emergence of new audiences, the expansion of cultural industries and new technologies markets, cultural de-concentration and decentralisation, cultural diversity and ethnic minorities and growing exchanges between national/local and international levels.
