Abstract: During Porto 2001 - European Capital of Culture, OAC carried out a survey on the audiences attending five artistic areas of the event’s programme (Performing Arts, Fine Arts, Music, Cinema and Street Performances). The results provide an overview of the spectators, their behaviour patterns and opinions about Porto 2001. The study includes a profile of spectators for each event, for specific areas and equipments as well as an identification of the factors determining attendance choices and the frequency of attendance. This work also provides a comparative analysis of the social profile of spectators together with their normal cultural activities, thus enabling different types of spectators to be defined. In this manner differentiated segments could be identified within a selective universe, demonstrating where the "Porto 2001 effect" was most keenly felt, in terms of a relative social diversity.
