Abstract: It is a well-known fact that the cultural habit of theatregoing is restricted to a relatively small section of public. This does not, however, imply that theatregoers are a homogeneous or stabilised group - as demonstrated by this survey on the audiences of the São João National Theatre (TNSJ) that enables common characteristics to be defined as well as specific features within the varied and dynamic complex of those audiences. The study analyses the different habits of theatre attendance and the satisfaction levels of the different audience segments of the TNSJ, including their motivations, attendance patterns, frequency of visits, knowledge/ignorance of plays being staged, playwrights, actors and directors, as well as their evaluation of the TNSJ as an institution and the patterns of their artistic choices. Within the different spectator segments, elements of selectivity on the one hand and of openness and diversification on the other, are shown to co-exist.
