Consumos e práticas culturais: Coimbra e outras paragens [Cultural consumption and practices: Coimbra and other cities]

Abstract: This text presents a brief synthesis of the global results of a study that aimed to find out the reality of certain cities in the north and centre (coastline) of Portugal - Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra, Guimarães and Oporto - and to consider some of the "nuances" that reflect particular tones in the distribution and behaviour of the audiences in the city of Coimbra. The interest in offering an analysis centred on Coimbra was heightened by the recent announcement by the Minister of Culture that the first National Capital of Culture will be celebrated in this very city in 2002. This is an unprecedent initiative in Portugal and, for this very reason, one that demands reflection on the existing cultural conditions. These conditions will influence the nature of the National Capital of Culture-2002, and this one, in its turn, will become a reference for other possible editions of the same event.

Retrato de um Museu (entrevista a Joaquim Pais de Brito) [Portrait of a Museum (interview with Joaquim Pais de Brito)]

Abstract: After some interviews with artistic creators published in previous issues, the interviewee is now Joaquim Pais de Brito, director of the National Museum of Ethnology. The interview took place on the occasion of the reopening of the museum, a pretext for a conversation on the diverse aspects of its evolution and its functioning. Considerations on different aspects of museological work arose, ranging from the articulation between museology and research to the process of puting on an exhibition, including the importance of field work in the collecting of materials, specialised training, and constitution of diversified archives, among other topics. A portrait of the museum seen from the inside.

Do interesse pelas artes [On the interest for the arts]

Abstract: Free courses of history and theory of art, their frequenters and the institutions that hold them are the object of a piece of research, of which some results are presented here. The research is centred on two institutions - Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes and Ar.Co - Centro de Artes & Comunicação Visual - it particularly deals with:

1) motives in looking for and choosing courses;

2) expectations, evaluations and their impact;

3) familiarity with arts and cultural practises.

Gostos e consumos musicais juvenis: dados comparativos a nível europeu [Young people's musical tastes and consumption: comparative data at the European level]

Abstract: In the "Indicators" section in the last issue of OBS, an article on juvenile reading habits, taking a comparative perspective on the European level, was published. The data that this study was based on had been gathered from a survey carried out in the context of the Grinzane Cavour literary prize in several countries during 1999. A new survey on juvenile musical tastes and consumption took place in 2000, in association with the same prize in a set of European countries. Considering the comparative interest of the available information, without forgetting its limitations (relative to sample construction and other methodological aspects, as well as how apt the same questions are to different realities), a succinct analysis of the principal themes found is proposed.
