Title Abstract: In this issue number 6 of the OBS a new heading is launched, in which interviews will be presented with a wide variety of protagonists in the cultural field. The first guest is João Brites, responsible for the "O Bando" theatre group and the "Performing Arts Unit of Expo'98 - Lisbon World Exhibition". The topics under discussion varied from an attempt to draw up an overview of the World Exhibition, one year after its occurrence, and a reflection on the new cycle announced in the existence of the group, with a trip to the group’s new studio in Palmela. Title Abstract: The topic of "provincial" culture is presently re-emerging in Portugal in an apparently anachronistic and inopportune manner, linked to the phenomenon of metropolisation and redefinition of the economic, social and symbolic uses of the spaces linked to this issue. But is this issue really so anachronistic or inopportune? What lies behind the public affirmation of local cultural traditions which are so ancient and yet so modern, that have to be (re)defined in territorial terms? What makes this topic such an important issue for debate between certain political and cultural players in the municipalities that surround Lisbon? The old dispute between neighbours, with the "Alfacinhas" (nickname for Lisboners - "little lettuces") on the one side, and the "Saloios" (nickname for those living in the surrounding areas of Lisbon) on the other, is present in the national collective imagination, above all due to the representations the former produce concerning the latter. On the basis of several literary and documentary sources, we attempt to establish a set of relevant questions for future analysis of this topic of "cultura saloia". Pages: 10-16 |

Title Abstract: Discussion of arts and crafts and any attempt to present a single all-encompassing definition is highly problematic, if not impossible. It obliges us to consider different cultural references and viewpoints, in relation to a plurality of objects and activities. Usually, people conceive arts and crafts as an expression of popular regional traditions and this activities are assimilated to popular arts and classified as "minor arts". Over time this restrictive definition has been replaced by another in which the criterion of artistic creation assumes an important role, thus establishing a more flexible frontier between "art" and "arts and crafts". This claims for a distinction between the notions of traditional arts and crafts and new forms of production (artisanal, artistic, craftsmanship, urban or modern) even though the frontiers are not always easily identifiable or mutually exclusive. Given this background of intrinsic non-definition, the present text attempts to present a brief overview of certain elements in order to understand the normative framework for this field.
