Cultura / Economia - uma relação a revisitar [Culture / Economy - a relationship to be reviewed]

Abstract: Returning to the highly topical issue of the relationship between culture and economy, this text aims to reflect on specific problems arising thereof, with resort to different instruments in order to unmask biased interpretations. The methods used include convocation of two emblematic authors (Bourdieu and Sombart) and analysis of the intersecting confrontation of various components from two different historical eras (the initial phase of capitalism and the contemporary phase). The background to this enquiry is the current background associated to the inextricable connection between market requirements and qualification requirements for culture and through culture. On this basis, a set of contradictory questions are identified that need to be addressed by the social sciences on the one hand and by cultural policies on the other.

Políticas culturais no Brasil: tristes tradições, enormes desafios [Cultural policies in Brazil: sad traditions, great challenges]

Abstract: This In this overview of different periods in the history of cultural policy in Brazil, from the 1930s to the present day, the author provides a critical interpretation of the different and successive guidelines and intervention policies applied to the sector. Over the period in question, the relationship between the different governments and cultural policies often present unexpected tensions and contradictions, in particular when initiative and creativity in the said policies coexist with repressive activities and censorship by dictatorial governments (1930s) or when, on the other hand, an almost complete absence of cultural policies coexists with exuberance in the various artistic fields (the democratic interregnum between 1945 and 1964). After analysis of the ambiguities experienced during the transition period (1985 to 1993) and the subsequent retreat by the State in relation to its decisive role for the sector in question, an overview is provided of the challenges involved in the recent construction of cultural policies, presenting and evaluating their respective guidelines/intervention.

Para uma análise tipológica do movimento associativo: estudo diagnóstico das associações culturais e recreativas na cidade de Lisboa [Towards atypological analysis of the association movement: diagnostic study of the cultural and recreational associations in Lisbon]

Abstract: The On the basis of a diagnostic analysis of the universe of cultural and recreational associations in the city of Lisbon, empirical observation is used to draw up an associational typology based on three distinct categories. The characteristics recorded in the different association models are analysed on the basis of several profile indicators used in this study and on a forward-looking perspective of these associations, based on the discourses provided by their mentors.

O lugar do associativismo voluntário português no contexto europeu: para um novo paradigma do interesse público [The role of Portuguese voluntary associations in the European context: towards a new public interest paradigm]

Bibliografia seleccionada e anotada do associativismo voluntário português/ em Portugal [Selected and noted bibliography about voluntary associativism in Portugal / Portuguese voluntary associativism]

Abstract: There is a great deal of talk today about the need to strengthen civil society in Portugal. The underlying objective is to reinforce civil society in order to enable it to make a more valid contribution, in light of the new challenges posed by European integration. One of the most valuable aspects of Portuguese Society has been the existence of voluntary associations. It is therefore worthwhile reflecting upon the situation of associations: their overall outlook, existing trajectories and the manner in which associations’ intervention may be improved. One of the main possibilities available is by means of partnerships between voluntary associations and the State, that may be extended further. But how? What safeguards are required in order to preserve the autonomy of both parties? What good practices should serve as a good example? Another relevant question is knowing which activities may be developed more fully and in what manner. I propose to reflect on this itinerary on the basis of some lessons drawn from various case studies analysed by the scientific community.

A dimensão educativa dos Museus e Centros de arte [The educational dimension of art centres and museums]

Abstract: This article analyses the educational dimension of museums, highlighting its central role in the genesis of the museum as an institution and the various expressions that have been assumed by museums. While, in its earliest days, the museum was primarily represented as an important resource for civilisation, later - due to evolution in learning procedures and in the concept of education - museums began to be seen as a place offering experience and significant learning contexts. The article also considers the situation of art museums in terms of their performance of the educational mission, on the basis of specific aspects of their respective content and professional dynamics.

Internacionalização de carreiras de artistas portugueses no sector da música - notas de uma pesquisa em curso [Internationalisation of careers of Portuguese artists in the music sector - notes from an ongoing research project]

Abstract: The present article provides an overview of an ongoing sociological research project that focuses upon internationalisation processes in the art world of the music sector. The empirical reference for this research is Portugal and emphasis is placed on the dissemination of music via direct performances, also considering the relationship with mediated performances. The project aims to characterise the relationship between national and international dimensions of careers in the art world of the music sector, in order to identify different models, focusing upon the concept of the internationalised artist. After a brief summary of theoretical and methodological aspects, the article classifies six types of direct performance careers with an international dimension.
