Amador ou profissional?... Peças de um puzzle [Amateur or professional?... Pieces of a puzzle]

Abstract: Based on certain projects developed at the Observatório das Actividades Culturais and also by drawing on contributions made by other researchers, two (provisional) tools are proposed in this text for considering the relationships between amateur and professional planes of artistic activity. This is the outline of a model - a hybrid model - and the proposal of a notion - that of composite spaces - aiming at a more accurate analytical approach to ambivalent situations in which the amateur / professional couple, traditionally considered as asymmetric, evolves today. The reconfigurations outlined along the text indicate the emergence of new working conditions in the artistic and cultural sector, among which the substitution of employment by project stands out.

Les nouvelles données de l'emploi culturel [New data on cultural employment]

Abstract: Cultural employment is at the centre of this debate that the author of this article re-examines by making a three-fold reflection in which he seeks to: 1. Specify the notion of cultural employment; 2. Delineate its new borders; and 3. Check the adequacy of the available statistical data for the sector. In the first moment, the author considers problems of definition, taking into account the ambivalence between branch of activity and nature of the work and between artistic employment as creation and as a participation in a process. In the second moment, the author puts forward a new classification for cultural companies with the emphasis being put on individual and virtual companies and on the predominant importance of a logic of project in artistic employment. Finally, the author presents some trends for the sector in various countries and underlines the interest of some innovations and extensions in relation to traditional nomenclature.

Pequenas Artes da Arte: considerações sobre espaços e agentes de criação cultural-artística intermédia [Arts of the art: notes on spaces and agents of intermediate cultural and artistic creation]

Abstract: This article centres on the challenges that the new territories of cultural-artistic creation present to more or less established hierarchies - such as the distinction between popular, traditional or low arts, media arts and/or arts for the masses, and the erudite, noble or high arts. In this perspective, fields examined include cartoons, short animation cinema, puppet or street animation theatre, and musical expressions such as choral singing. To analyse the specific configurations of these forms of creativity, the concept of intermediate arts is proposed. This concept refers to the changing classifications in the artistic field, as well as political-cultural transformations in contemporary societies.

Emprego e trabalho culturais em Portugal: criação de emprego e qualificação profissional [Cultural employment and work in Portugal: job creation and professional qualification]

Abstract: This paper discusses some aspects of the current state of research concerning cultural employment and data available on Portugal. Recognising the importance of the tertiary sector in involving the population in voluntary cultural work, attention is drawn to its limitations from the perspective of the professionalism that is implied in relation to the development of cultural activities in the digital era. After a critical presentation of the available data, recent trends are discussed in summary form, considering the determining role of cultural policies from a dual perspective: policies that address the issues of creation, and those that are concerned with the qualification and professionalism of cultural employment and activities in Portugal.

Um percurso sem mapa [A  journey without a map]

Abstract: Continuing the series of interviews and statements made by several cultural sector figures that have been published in OBS, in this issue André Gago looks back on his career. This has been a professional route filled with different activities, notably those of theatre, cinema and television actor, show and stage director, teacher of theatrical studies and trade union leader. These activities are analysed from a personal point of view, that also gives us insights on the problems and contradictions of the scenic arts field in Portugal.

Para uma Base de Dados Estatísticos - Sector da Cultura [For a statistical database - the cultural sector]

Abstract: This synopsis text presents the main lines of a statistical database model that has been proposed in a project presented by the OAC to the Ministry of Culture. It is planned to address two main objectives: first, the production of indicators for describing activities and their impact on the public, and for monitoring, managing and assessing the measures adopted; and second, the modernisation of Portuguese cultural statistics, namely those that are derived from administrative acts.
