Title Abstract: The research activity carried out by this Observatory from its beginning (1996) until the present is reviewed and characterised according to 5 general directions covering the twenty six projects under its responsibility. These general directions comprise the following: re-thinking the production and diffusion of statistical information on culture done by the Ministry of Culture and the Instituto Nacional de Estatística; surveying and characterising cultural institutions that are the target of public cultural policy measures; analysis of audiences and cultural practises; study of creators and of cultural diffusion agents and approaches to spending on culture involving the public and private sectors. The final part of the text presents some trends deriving from the results of the research carried out. Pages: 2-10 |

Title Abstract: The "Survey on Traditional Music Groups in Portugal", whose results are partially presented here, analyses 988 Groups (among which the traditional folk dance groups predominate) that are performing regularly. The opening part of the text presents the historical framework of the emergence and development of the Groups in question, as elements in the field of representations of memory. In the second part, the Groups are characterised according to geographical location, date of foundation and the number of members that comprise them. Several problems that are considered in this article include: the chronology of the first Traditional Music Groups, based on the information provided by the Survey; the big growth of this type of Groups after the 25th April Revolution; the age structure of their members and the question of their renovation. Title Abstract: Through in-depth interviews of participants in so-called "young art" competitions, members of the respective juries and local authority elements who support this initiative, it was possible to gather interesting information used for a study of which the summary is presented here. The characterisation of the training trajectories followed; the role of the school in the construction of the social identity of young artists; the representations on artistic activity and the function of competitions as institutionalising devices, at an initial stage in artists’ careers, are just some of the subjects that make up the specific social space for which, in the present article, the designation of "young art world" is proposed. Title Abstract:
Given the resilience of a
library classification connected to the idea of a library centred on the
document and on the person of the librarian, the author calls our attention
to the need to develop other modes of organisation of books and documents
that take account of the triangle users/collections/staff and favour easy
and direct access by library users. Pages: 33-39 |

Title Abstract: From the results of the studies gathered in the latest series of the Research Programme "Sobre a Leitura" "(On Reading"), settled by the Observatório das Actividades Culturais and the Instituto Português do Livro e das Bibliotecas (the 2 preceding series were presented in numbers 5 and 8 of the OBS), a reflection-summary is made that considers the relation between printed writing and the new information and communication technologies. The libraries, that in the previous studies clearly expressed their concerns in being able to provide audiovisual means, computers connected to the internet and various multi-media supports, now appear as a privileged site for new models of cumulative reading in which the new and old reading supports are reconciled.
